IT nightmare makes time for The Guild

It is an IT workers nightmare when 'routine' maintenance causes service to be unavailable, been there and got that badge. So I hope the tired out turbine troubleshooters can get to the root cause and put things in place to reduce the chances of a repeat (it never goes away).

I took advantage of the down time to catch up on Series 3, 4 and 5 of The Guild. Fantastic & hilarious.

Riders of Rohan delayed

Beta testing of RoR has been very successful in finding loads of bugs so the release is put back to 15th October. More detail can be found on Contains Moderate Peril.

The countdown timer has been adjusted.

This means Loremaster Florandir will get some adventuring time after all!

Grimberg in Nan CurunĂr

Grimberg is helped by Guardian Sofor with quests in Nan Curunir outside Isengard. This took him through level 73. We chatted about Captains and realised Grimbergs 20% crit chance was key to keeping his DPS up even though he is still fighting with his L65 legendary 2 handed hammer.

In the screenie the Master of Beasts gets a slap from an Ent.

Adventuring and blogging has slowed down recently due to real world and due to setting up an upgraded PC. With Lotro on an SSD load times are dramatically reduced and I can recommend this upgrade to reduce lag & delays when playing the game.

Riders of Rohan Pre Ordered - 3 Months to get to L75

The date for the Riders of Rohan has been announced as the 5th of Sept. I have added a Countdown Clock as a bit of fun. This gives Grimberg 3 months to achieve level 75 before the level cap goes up to 85. Captain Grimberg should be able to make this but poor Loremaster Florandir doesn't look like he will get any adventuring time.

There are three pre-order options for the Riders of Rohan expansion - the Legendary edition with its extra bag looks very appealing as Apelred is always running out of bag space because he is an Explorer and collects lots of materials for his crafting friends.

UPDATE
I went for the Legendary edition & for the 40% off Turbine Points deal that is offered when applying for the Pre-order. I got a bit confused when asked to enter new account details (email address &password), this is for a new Digital River account and nothing to do with your Turbine account. You can pay Digital River using Paypal so you can avoid registering your credit card with yet another company. After your puchase you get a key which you use to upgrade your Turbine account. There is no long download needed, all the stuff must have been in the last patch.

Here is what you get as immediate benefits according to the Turbine Account message. (I logged in straight away and got the upgrade so the 1 hour must be a worst case.)

You have successfully upgraded your subscription! Thank you for your patience while we process your request. Changes to your subscription may take up to one hour to be processed. You may not be able to log into the game or forums during this time.
You have activated The Lord of the Rings Online™: Riders of Rohan Legendary Edition™ Pre-Purchase. As soon as you log into the game, your characters will have access to:
  • An exclusive Rohirrim Mount - The Steed of the Eastemnet with matching War-steed Appearance available when Riders of Rohan launches
  • An exclusive in-game Rohan title - Friend of the Mark
  • An exclusive full set of Rohirrim Armor - Armor of the Eastemnet
  • A 6th Inventory Bag - Grants 15 Additional Storage Slots
  • Legendary Item Booster - Adds one additional legacy to your legendary weapon

  • A Rohan cloak that provides a power bonus to your hero
  • The Outriders Token - A 25% XP Boost for all your characters on your account that will last up to level 75
  • And, upon reaching level 20, a Soldier on Landscape Rohan Appearance You will automatically be provided access to the full content and features of Riders of Rohan when it launches.
An email receipt has been sent to you that provides additional details about your purchase.

    Lottery Winner

Being a former Euro server bod I have never had the chance to enter the Turbine Lottery until now. I entered all 7 of my toons and won twice. The rewards were well worth having - 50 blueberry muffins & 2 pieces of nice level 15 jewellery for the lower level toon, 30 Westfold Athelas & Celebrant Salves and a 251k IXP rune for Apel who is level 67. A very pleasant surprise.

Hunters hoping for changes to Isengard

Hunters dont like the look of the current changes around focus in Isengard according to this forum post. There are some bits of positive feedback as well. Lets hope any issues from beta can be ironed out before the official launch.

    Captains Dev Diary

Captain Grimberg is hoping to make Level 65 by the time Rise of Isengard is available, bit of a tall order given the lack of game time he gets.

Captains are getting a major overhaul in Rise of Isengard. See the Dev Diary for details. Here are a few highlights.

The main change is to try and give Captains a serious chance at being a Tank with a revamped Leader of Men trait line. Cappies will be able to Block when wielding a 2-handed weapon, Routing cry will not require a defeat event and can be made a Forced Taunt giving some hope of keeping aggro. I suppose my favourite stun effect will be removed.

The Captain now receives all of their Tactical Offence Rating and Outgoing Healing Rating from Might (instead of Will). Hopefully this stat change will ease the stat balancing act a bit as long as Power is not an issue.

As Grimberg gets lonely without his herald he is pleased to see the trait “Strength from Within” no longer prevents the summoning of Heralds and Archers.

    Turbine points or grind?

OK Apelred reckoned with his limited game time it would take him 2 months to grind enough IXP & scrolls to achieve his plan for his Bow. Not fancying this he appealed to his handler to take advantage of the Turbine double points and invest £20 to do the same in an evening. So having done the deed here is the result. Apel can now concentrate on exploring Enedwaith (he has been saving the quests until he had a decent weapon to benefit from the IXP).

Apel also finally finished Supreme Master Tailor with a little help from the AH and has crafted the Accuracy Relic that gives Ranged Offence & Crit.

    Eldar latency comparison

The Eldar server is back up and the only issue Apelred has found so far is he is Nobby No Mates as his Friends list is empty.

Latency on the US server is higher as expected but not so high as to cause any concern.

Update Sat 4th June - I experienced a couple of lost connections today so maybe a few teething problems.

Apelred looking forward to Grouping in Strength Stance

The Turbine Dev Diary describes some very welcome changes to the utility of Hunter traits which mean Hunters will be able to stay in Strength Stance while grouping thus making some ground back on Runekeepers as the main DPS class. Hunters also get better options for Crowd Control and the possibility of a fellowship Purge Poison.

    Class Changes in F2P Release

Just spotted this great summary on Casual Stroll to Mordor of the Class changes coming our way in F2P (Free to Play).
Hunters are getting interrupt & remove corruption skills!!! Hooray and thankyou devs.

Changes are also due for Champs, Loremasters and especially Cappies.

    CAPPIES
The Lead the Charge & Leader of Men trait lines for Cappies are being reorganised, not sure of the implications but would like to find out as I am leveling Grimberg my Cappy atm, recently got him to level 40.

Doc Holiday has kindly done some number crunching of the Cappy changes in his blog

UPDATE - Reading around the forums

    • Extra Level 1 Melee skill "Sure Strike" to alleviate early leveling boredom (good)
    • Banners have been nerfed making Heralds more of an option at higher levels (not got to high enough level to affect me).
    • Tier 5 and 6 crafted Armaments are now available (better get leveling my Tailor :))
    • Lead the Charge is now DPS/Herald line (includes Oathbreaker pet)
    • Leader of Men is now Tanking/Buffing line
    • Hands of Healing is unchanged as Healing line
Here is a post on Lotro Weekly with screen shots comparing Live with Beta

Here is the original Lotro Beta Journal post

UPDATE - well nearly two months later it looks like Codemasters & Turbine have resolved their legal difficulties and us Europeans will get the Free to Play upgrade on Tuesday 2nd November as per this Codemasters announcement.

    Lotro & Lore

I came across these very thoughtful articles on how well Tolkien's lore has been implemented in LOTRO - well worth a look.
